After years of delays and COVID-related disasters, the final film in the Daniel Craig era of Bond - NO TIME TO DIE - has finally hit theatres. Today, I look at how the movie masterfully uses emotional stakes in a franchise defining third-act finale. Very annoyed to have misspelt Cary Joji Fukunaga, hope the lord forgives me. You were correct in not giving away the plot points; this is one of my all-time favorite movies, not only because my wife is Italian (and we live part-time in Italy) but because it is, as you say, 'everything a movie should be.' It is simply, just perfect, capturing the essence of authentic Italy, and its eternal timelessness. God bless all movie lovers...and this will make you love classic cinema all the more (just make sure to get the English subtitle version of it)...and after this, check out Jack Lemmon in 'Macaroni,' and 'The Great Beauty,' which is thoroughly haunting for anyone approaching retirement age. Funny how the Italians teach us how to make great movies again, just makes me sad that Americans only create comic book nonsense nowadays!

    As someone who has never really seen this movie, but has always wanted to, it makes me sad to see how many people see this film as bad. And it does seem to go beyond mere opinion for some people. Though I suppose that’s how it is for most things. People saying “it’s just my opinion”, while simultaneously and clearly acting as though their opinion is an objective fact.

    Joker in my opinion is ridiculously uninspired bordering on plagiarism. From what I hear Joker 2 is going to be another "homage" to Scorsese but a remake of New York, New York...

  • @0rangehair369
    @0rangehair369 Місяць тому

    I disagree with the take that the film has nothing to say with it's homages, I think even quentin tarantino talked about it on a podcast, but the choice is deliberately there to break the rules scorsese typically uses in his films. During the course of taxi driver and king of comedy, scorsese works very hard to disconnect you from the characters of travis and rupert, you're expected to see pieces of yourself and others any sane person knows they are bad people and you shouldn't identify with them. Joker does the opposite, it works very hard to get you to identify with Arthur and understand him, to the point at which when he finally kills murray, you're supposed to agree with him, making it more satisfying than the endings to both king of comedy or taxi driver, because you should relate to arthur, as horrific as that is. Scorsese films are about people who is vile, disgusting and morally bad, joke tries to breakdown a person snapping and why we would relate to it. Highly recommend taratino's video on it, can probably find it b just searching taratino talks about joker on youtube.

    excellent essay! the way the movie uses classical structures but also this handheld style of filmmaking really speaks to me. it made me think of star wars, like a grounded version of the sins of the father motif in star wars. anyway i'm glad it's getting some recognition here. cianfrance is a very special filmmaker.

    i love Unbreakable and Split, but I hated how David Dunn’s story ended. Killed in a puddle by a couple of security guards. It felt so degrading. It didn’t come across as well. I think you’re right about a lot of Shyamalan’s intentions for these movies, and I would have really got behind what he was doing in Glass, if they handled Bruce Willis character differently. I get the intention that this is a more realistic world, and ultimately, the larger story is about the rest of the world finding out about these people. But it didn’t come across that way, David’s death felt mean spirited, sort of pathetic, and extremely anti-climactic for arguably the hero of a trilogy of films. It just didn’t work and it sort of made the whole house of cards fall apart for me. I’m not saying saying David Dunn couldn’t die in the movie, I just hated the way they did it. There are things in glass I really like a lot. but unfortunately, it was a disappointing, ending to a really cool trilogy, for me

    I mean i liked parts of this film but i feel like with any piece of art if your explanation for why it didnt do well is that its the audience's fault then you are on shaky ground. It sounds very much like a unsuccessful amateur band blaming the crowd for not getting their music.

    MoS is probably the best of the three Snyderverse films, it’s no masterpiece, but it’s not the spawn from hell people make it out to be. I get what it was trying to do but the execution in a lot of the most talked about scenes is downright flawed at best and atrocious at worst.

    I'm sorry but I'm just not convinced. There are technically worse Superman movies out there but no other movie betrayed the core of the character more than the one where Jonathan Kent told his adopted son that letting a bus full of children might have been the right call.
